Reptile is a family business tucked away in the lush green countryside of West Wales. Established in Highgate, London, in 1988 by Fine Art graduates Carlo Briscoe and Ed Dunn, the partnership has been producing tiles for clients worldwide. Using traditional maiolica (tin glaze) techniques, the husband and wife team produce everything in-house. The custom-built workshop adjoins their cottage, which is an old converted butter factory. The tiles are made in several sizes. Handmade or dust-pressed, the tiles are all hand dipped in glaze and hand painted using stains and oxides to create gorgeous clean colours. The tiles are then fired in electric kilns to 1060 º C (1940 º F). The clay is white, and the tin technique is the same as delftware and faience. The designs are constantly evolving, and new ideas are regularly showcased on our website and on Instagram. Wildlife and flora feature strongly. Birds and animals of every kind are depicted on individual tiles and panels. Tile panels based on Chinoiserie wallpaper are a speciality, and are available in any size and format. We adapt the flora and fauna to suit the customer’s location if required. Every design is unique. We also produce lots of individual tile ranges in a variety of colourways, dipping into the rich tradition of tile history to include birds, animals, flowers, ships and cityscapes. A contemporary twist combines tradition with a modern angle. For example, London has been depicted with all of its modern architecture, illustrated in age-old cobalt oxide. Large tile panels can transform any interior, propelling the space into a stunning environment. The tiles compliment a wide range of architectural styles. The attention to detail, and a strong aesthetic awareness lead to a distinctive and unique result. Commissions have included food halls, hotels, restaurants, hospitals and shops, as well as countless kitchens and bathrooms. Clients have been private and commercial, from a small splashback to a 27 metre long wall in Waitrose on King’s Road, London. In fact we painted tile panels for more than 70 Waitrose shops over a ten year period. We pride ourselves on our communication and adaptability, ensuring a prompt and friendly service with clear, realistic deadlines to ensure client satisfaction. The business continues to thrive as people struggle to find unique products made by craftspeople, with original design and a personal touch, made here in the UK.
